Sony Interactive Entertainment halted development of a fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 via cease-and-desist letter, ending nine months of work on a PvP mod with faction-based gameplay. The cancellation reflects the franchise's lack of official multiplayer offerings since Naughty Dog removed it from Part 2 and cancelled The Last of Us Online in 2023.

Modder Speclizer received a cease-and-desist letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that development of a fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 be stopped. The mod was in development for nine months starting in January 2026 and was scheduled for release in September 2026. The mod included PvP gameplay featuring Seraphite and WLF factions, listening mechanics, perks, maps not in the base game, public matchmaking, and pre-match loadouts. The project was partially funded through a Patreon account.
Modder Speclizer had announced plans to develop a co-op multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 after the public release of the PvP mode. The developer stated that PvP development was the easier path and would create a foundation for subsequent co-op development.
Naughty Dog canceled The Last of Us Online, an official multiplayer game that was reportedly 80 percent complete at the time of cancellation. The project had a loyal player base during its development phase. Former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida stated the game was 'great,' and the project's director Vinit Agarwal noted that many developers who worked on it considered it 'the best multiplayer game they've ever played.'
A multiplayer mode was originally planned for The Last of Us Part 2 by developer Naughty Dog but was ultimately not included in the final release. The developer chose to focus entirely on the single-player experience instead.
