Following Sony's cancellation, Xbox Game Studios picked up publishing duties for Physint. Xbox agreed to continue funding and publishing the game after Kojima convinced them to take over the project from Sony.
Kojima Productions' next project, OD: Knock, is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and is also funded by Xbox. The project is progressing smoothly and is being described as a completely new kind of game that tests thresholds of fear.
Hideo Kojima stated that Kojima Productions has not yet decided which game engine will be used for Physint development. Kojima said he is still experimenting with different engine options. The studio's previous titles Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2 used Sony's Decima engine, developed by Guerrilla Games, but no decision has been made about Physint's engine following the move to Xbox.
Sony decided to cancel its publishing deal for Physint, a tactical espionage game developed by Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions. The cancellation occurred in June 2026. Sony's decision was reportedly due to budget and timeline concerns, though Kojima Productions refuted these claims.
Hideo Kojima stated that he does not know whether Physint will release on PlayStation platforms under Xbox's publishing. He indicated that the decision on multiplatform release versus Xbox exclusivity would be determined by Xbox, noting Xbox's stated philosophy of delivering games to as many gamers as possible regardless of platform, though this strategy has shifted under new CEO Asha Sharma who has prioritized exclusives.
Xbox's new CEO Asha Sharma, appointed at the beginning of 2026, shifted the company's strategy back toward exclusive titles. Xbox confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will remain Xbox exclusives, though some titles like Fable and Forza Horizon 6 still have planned PS5 releases.
Hideo Kojima discussed plans to potentially adapt Physint into a live-action movie, with a goal of reducing the timeline between the game's release and the film adaptation. Kojima noted that modern digital production allows using the same assets for both movie and game development. He is currently handling casting for the game.
