The USS George Washington carrier group has replaced the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East following the Lincoln's deployment in support of U.S. operations during the Iran war.
The USS Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, docked at Laem Chabang Port near Pattaya, Thailand on September 2 after a deployment lasting 286 days, including approximately 250 consecutive days at sea. The carrier was returning from the Middle East where it had supported U.S. naval blockade and combat operations during the Iran war.
Two American service members from the USS Abraham Lincoln were involved in a physical fight outside a bar in Pattaya at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday morning near Walking Street. Thai police responded to an emergency call from a Thai citizen. The sailors were taken to a joint operations center at the Hard Rock Cafe in Pattaya and subsequently returned to the aircraft carrier. Both service members were restricted to the ship for the remainder of the port call.
A sailor assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln went overboard in August and was rescued safely. The sailor was subsequently transferred for follow-on care. The Navy is investigating the circumstances of how and why the sailor fell overboard.
The USS Abraham Lincoln must make an additional port stop before returning to the United States because it was diverted to support U.S. operations in the Iran war and did not complete its required time in the Indo-Pacific region. The carrier was originally assigned to the Asian Pacific area of deployment and must fulfill the remaining time commitment in that region, extending the overall deployment beyond its originally planned end date of early summer 2026.
The commanding officer of the USS Abraham Lincoln briefed crew members before the Thailand port visit about prohibited activities including prostitution and marijuana use, and designated certain areas of Pattaya as off-limits. Service members were warned that infractions would be met with maximum punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Photographs of the USS Abraham Lincoln taken during its arrival in Thailand revealed visible rust and worn paint across parts of the carrier's exterior. The ship was commissioned in 1989 and had been at sea for an extended period. There was no apparent conflict damage, though rust and wear can threaten watertight seals and eventually require shipyard repairs if left unchecked.
Thai authorities increased police patrols and deployed hundreds of officials to manage traffic and public safety during the USS Abraham Lincoln's port visit to Pattaya. Thai police set up extra patrols at six strategic checkpoints around the city to respond to incidents related to the influx of approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines from the carrier.
Family members of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln reported deteriorating conditions during the deployment, including food and hygiene shortages, mold in showers, broken toilets, disrupted mail deliveries, and declining morale. The issues were attributed to lack of supplies from U.S. bases in the region that were repeatedly targeted by Iranian strikes. Family members also alleged that multiple service members attempted to jump overboard, though the Navy confirmed only one sailor went overboard in early August.
