Météo-France advances alert precision to neighborhood level
Météo-France achieves neighborhood-level weather alert precision, expanding to four new phenomena with heat waves coming by 2027.
Event / Disaster
Météo-France expanded its Vigilance weather alert system on September 1, 2026, introducing sub-departmental precision for storms, winds, rain-flooding, and snow-ice forecasts. The upgrade follows a August 24 tornado in Pomas that injured dozens and damaged over 300 homes despite only a departmental orange alert. The system has improved from 10-kilometer to kilometer-level resolution since 2001, with planned extensions to heat wave forecasts.

The Vigilance alert system, launched in 2001 following the 1999 storms Lothar and Martin, has progressively improved from approximately 10-kilometer resolution in the early 2000s to current kilometer-level precision. Sub-departmental alerts will not be applied uniformly across all phenomena and regions, but will be concentrated in areas most prone to extreme weather events.
On August 24, a tornado swept through Pomas, a village south of Carcassonne in the Aude department, injuring several dozen people and damaging more than 300 homes across a narrow corridor of approximately six kilometers.
Starting on a Tuesday in September 2026, Météo-France extended its sub-departmental Vigilance alert system to four additional weather phenomena across mainland France and Corsica: strong winds, storms, rain-flooding, and snow-ice. Previously, this granular forecasting was applied only to avalanches and storm surge. The system aims to provide finer geographic precision than the existing departmental-level alerts by mapping hazard zones at kilometer-level resolution, particularly in coastal regions, areas with complex terrain, and regions subject to regional wind patterns such as mistral and tramontane.
Météo-France indicated that the sub-departmental Vigilance system could be extended to cover extreme heat (canicule) forecasts by the following summer, enhancing early warning capabilities for this weather phenomenon.
