Brazilian police successfully rescued 13 children aged 4-5 years who were held hostage in a municipal early childhood education center in Curitiba, Paraná state. The children were taken into a classroom by an assailant who barricaded them inside. All 13 children were recovered alive and turned over to medical services and firefighters for care. At least one child sustained injuries from the attacker.
Brazil has experienced multiple attacks on educational institutions in recent years. In April 2023, a man killed four children with an axe at a daycare center in Blumenau, also located in southern Brazil.
After his death, police identified the assailant and discovered he suffered from schizophrenia. However, his motivations remained unclear and it was unknown whether he had any connection to the kindergarten facility.
The attacker spread flammable liquid in the classroom and held a lighter in his hand, threatening to set the building on fire. During negotiations, he remained surrounded by children with one child on his lap. As negotiations progressed, the children became increasingly agitated and the man began hitting them, prompting police to decide on tactical intervention to prevent greater harm.
An armed assailant was fatally shot by special forces of the Paraná Military Police during a tactical intervention at the kindergarten. The attacker had entered the facility on a bicycle, jumped over the perimeter fence, and barricaded himself with children in a classroom. He was armed with a knife and carried a lighter and a firearm that was later determined to be fake. Police conducted approximately 2.5 to 3 hours of negotiations before deciding to conduct a tactical intervention when children became increasingly distressed and the assailant began physically attacking them.
