Lil Durk won the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his single "All My Life" featuring J. Cole. He has been nominated for Grammy Awards four times total.
Federal prosecutors sought to use Durk's lyrics as evidence during the trial, including lines from songs like "Ahhh Ha" that prosecutors claimed referenced the alleged plot against Quando Rondo. Defense attorneys argued the lyrics were artistic expression tailored for commercial appeal and did not reflect literal plans or admissions.
Durk's defense team, including attorney Brian Steel, argued that the three cooperating witnesses were unreliable and had falsely blamed Durk because he was a "big fish" they could hand over to prosecutors in exchange for shorter prison sentences. Defense attorneys claimed Kavon Grant, who had access to Durk's credit cards as his personal assistant, was the actual mastermind behind the plot.
Lil Durk was arrested in 2024 while attempting to board a flight to Dubai. He had achieved his first solo No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with "7220" two years prior and released follow-up album "Almost Healed" which debuted at No. 3 on the chart in 2023.
The federal prosecution's case relied primarily on testimony from three alleged participants in the plot who pleaded guilty and became government cooperators: Kacey "OTF Jam" Hester, Keith "Flacka" Jones, and Kavon "OTF Vonnie" Grant. These witnesses testified that Durk planned for shooters to travel from Chicago to Los Angeles in 2022 and offered cash rewards for the attack, though no payments were completed.
Federal prosecutors claimed Durk ordered members of his Only the Family (OTF) collective to murder rapper Quando Rondo (Tyquian Bowman) as revenge for the 2020 killing of Durk's close friend and collaborator King Von. King Von (Dayvon Bennett) was fatally shot outside the Monaco Hookah Lounge in Atlanta during an early morning exchange of gunfire.
Despite being acquitted on murder-for-hire and related charges, Durk was not released from custody. He remains detained pending a second trial on federal racketeering charges that accuse him of operating his OTF label as a violent gang. The trial is scheduled to begin on October 5.
A federal jury in Los Angeles acquitted rapper Lil Durk (Durk Devontay Banks) of all charges including murder-for-hire, stalking, and conspiracy on September 11. The jury deliberated for three days before reaching the not guilty verdict. Durk had faced charges that could have resulted in a life sentence.
In 2022, gunmen opened fire on a black Cadillac Escalade carrying rapper Quando Rondo near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, firing 18 rounds. Rondo was struck but survived; however, his cousin Saviay'a Tilal "Lul Pab" Robinson, 24 years old, was killed in the crossfire. Prosecutors alleged this shooting was orchestrated by Durk as a hit on Rondo.
Two co-defendants tried alongside Durk, David "Browneyez" Lindsey and Deandre "OTF Dede" Wilson, were convicted of stalking and stalking conspiracy charges but acquitted of murder-for-hire charges. They are scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.
