A petition launched in July by Giovanni Galante, whose wife Grace Catherine Galante was killed in the September 11 attacks, calling for organizers to bar Mayor Mamdani from the 25th anniversary ceremony has gathered more than 95,000 signatures. Governor Hochul's office responded to criticism from the Port Authority Retired Police Association regarding her decision to illuminate One World Trade Center for Muslim American Heritage Month. The office stated that the governor "has enormous respect for all the families who lost loved ones on 9/11" and emphasized that Muslim New Yorkers "served as first responders and helped unite the city in the aftermath of 9/11," adding that "Islamophobia has no place in New York."
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum stated that it keeps the annual commemoration free of politics. Government officials who attend do not deliver remarks and are asked to remain in a designated area.
The Port Authority Retired Police Association, led by president John McDevitt, issued letters dated August 14 to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul urging them not to attend the September 11 commemoration at Ground Zero. The association argued that their presence would cause "deep pain" to victims' families, survivors, and first responders, and that the ceremony should remain free of political controversy. The association noted that 37 Port Authority police officers and 47 other Port Authority members were killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that he plans to attend the September 11 commemoration and "proudly honor" the families, survivors, and first responders affected by the terror attack.
