Prior to the killings, tensions existed between Natalino C. and his employers. Disputes arose over payment for certain services, particularly between Milena and the caretaker. The couple's daughter-in-law reported to investigators that family members had suggested terminating his employment, describing him as not trustworthy and expressing concerns about drug use and a threatening presence. However, some neighbors noted the caretaker maintained a close relationship with Jean-Marie Grenier, describing him as being treated like a son.
Jean-Marie Grenier, 79, a French osteopath and former rally driver, and his companion Milena, 62, a Romanian national, were found dead at their residence in Odiáxere, Algarve, Portugal on September 11. The police judicial statement indicates the deaths occurred in a context of extreme violence, with victims first attacked with a blunt object causing grave injuries, then their bodies dragged into a water cistern on the property where the suspect attempted to decompose them using chemical products.
The French Embassy to Portugal is following the situation and maintaining contact with Portuguese authorities regarding the deaths of the French national and his companion. A diplomatic source declined to comment on the individual case.
Natalino C., a 45-year-old Brazilian national who worked as caretaker and security guard for the couple for seven years, was arrested on Saturday following the discovery of their bodies. He was found in possession of approximately 5,000 euros in cash and several items of jewelry identified as belonging to the victims. The suspect was held in provisional detention after presentation before the criminal instruction court in Portimão.
Natalino C. had been employed by the couple since 2019 following an armed burglary at their residence. During that incident, armed individuals broke into the home; Jean-Marie was grazed by a projectile and Milena suffered a knee fracture. The caretaker was initially engaged to provide security and protection for the couple.
Jean-Marie Grenier, the 79-year-old victim, was a former rally driver who was prominent in the sport during the 1970s and 1980s. He was the first winner of the Ronde du Quercy rally in 1976. The Ronde du Quercy organizers paid tribute to him on social media following news of his death.
